Abstract

Heavy metals have been recognized as harmful environmental pollutant known to produce highly toxic effects on different organs and systems of both humans and animals. Removal of a heavy metal ion Fe (II) from artificial wastewater has been successfully performed by adsorption process using chitosan-rubber seed shells activated carbon (CRSSAC) composite in a batch system. CRSSAC1, CRSSAC2, and CRSSAC3 were prepared by adding 1, 2, and 3 grams of rubber seed shells activated carbon into 100 ml chitosan solution then dropped into a 3% STPP-Ethanol solution. The adsorption process has been conducted for wastewater at pH 5 by adding 3 grams of the composite into 50 ml of solution. Samples were stirred using a shaker with time variations on 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 minutes at a speed of 150 rpm. Samples were filtered and then analyzed using AAS. The results showed that the best conditions were obtained for CRSSAC1 with adsorption time of 25 minutes which can decrease 0.1236 mg Fe (II) for a gram of composite.
